The works in this show portray me, my matrilineal line and the ghostly apparitions that exist for me within landscapes, architectural forms and interiors of my past. I am interested in notions of care, in women's experiences of steadfastness, protection and guardianship; and simultaneously our invisibility.
As a daughter of the counterculture, I often paint from the viewpoint of a voyeur transcending the constraints of time: looking out to past landscapes, seeing through structural openings that no longer exist, or into rooms of a handmade home I once knew that had no doors (this was an architectural tool used at the time to collapse privacy for communal living which instead put women and children at risk).
Iām interested in where utopian architecture and ideals become dystopian as a reflection of my own experience. I take this dark conceptual terrain and, as a healed adult, paint the scenes anew, rendering them safe.
